delicious and diigo
I'm ready for spring and the spring cleaning of my favorites! I really like the way websites can be saved, organized and shared on the computer using Delicious. I would like to share some of mine with you and my username is saramcarothers. I've already found some people who have really interesting bookmarks that I'll look at in the future. It will be great to see which websites my colleagues have bookmarked. I think that using delicious or diigo in the classroom will save students time in researching as well as help them to find more relevant information. I haven't had much experience with Diigo yet but plan to experiment with it. I figured out how to highlight but still need to learn how to make annotations. This will be very useful in teaching students how to summarize text and prevent them from plagiarizing. I read that a teacher can use Diigo Educator to create groups and student accounts. There is a lot of potential here. I just wish that I could have installed a toolbar at my school, but right now at my school, the computers restart "from scratch" and we're not allowed to make permanent changes. I'll have to talk to the tech person about that! I'm going to look at ipads tonight because I think I could get more work done for this class. It's really frustrating when youtube is blocked and, although I know how to override it, that only works on teachers' computers SOME of the time. Then you have to restart the computer and log in to 5 different places all over again! It's funny that the blocks are meant to protect students from harmful content but it is also protecting them from learning!

I agree, this will really help students with research on projects and discovery new ideas and interests. I also think this will help students maximize their time!
ReplyDeleteI too love spring cleaning my favorites. Does that make us geeks?
ReplyDeleteWithout being instructed to do so, I'm not sure I would have "networked." Because we were, however, I found an awesome set of bookmarks, so I am totally with you there.
I can't wait to try out the Educator sector of Diigo. And I am with you on the blocking. I swear I curse it every week. The reality is those blocks really only keep out the adults. The students know how to get around them.
Keep up the spring thoughts :-)
Diigo does have an option for something to use if you can't install anything in the toolbar, but it is so much more convenient to have it there. If students were using it and signed into the network, you could have it set up so they would automatically log into their delicious or Diigo account. It's definitely worth beginning to explore with your tech people. Geri has a good point about the educator upgrade to Diigo.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many issues with filters that you don't want to get me started. I understand the law and the need to keep kids safe, but so many of them actually by inadvertently prevent this by preventing us from teaching students about what they should and shouldn't do because there are in such a walled environment that they don't know what exists beyond it (until they get home from school where they aren't filtered in most cases).
