course goals

I hope to become comfortable with using new technology in the classroom and for my personal life.  I finally broke down and got a cell phone this year, which shows my resistance towards adapting to technology.  I associated lack of personal communication with new technology but this class has already shown some of the benefits that technology offers, and as an educator I need to learn about it before I evaluate it.  I think that potentially I can use what I learn in this class with my students and the teachers at my school.  I just fear that my computer will break down if I try to do too much with it and that our lives are becoming too simulated and less authentic.  Hopefully this class will prove me wrong.

  1. Sara,
I sympathize! I've had a cell phone for a while, but absolutely refuse to get a smart phone. I don't want to be connected all the time. I also use a desktop computer instead of a laptop for that very reason. My father-in-law tried to talk me into getting a kindle or some other type of e-reader, but I can't imagine not turning the pages of a book.

  2. After having a pay as you go cell phone for years, I jumped to a smartphone last year and do like the convenience of having my calendar and notes readily available. I find I don't do lots of email on it unless I'm in a meeting and I'm bored.

I think it is a valid question about how the technology is impacting life today, but as it has become an integral part of the lives of most teenagers (and even younger students), we need to look at how to make its use in school valid and educational. What can we do with technology and what should we continue to do without it?
